Performance of TCP/IP Over Next Generation Broadband Wireless Access Networks

Overview This paper presents performance evaluation results for Internet access over the next generation of broadband wireless access networks (2G-BWA). The challenge for these, mostly fixed access technologies stems from non line-of-sight deployment with high coverage and spectrum efficiency combined with link performance comparable to that of competing wired technologies (DSL, Cable modem). We present an overview of the features at the physical (PHY) and medium access control (MAC) layers which are key to a successful 2G-BWA design and demonstrate the impact of such features on end-to-end link performance with typical TCP/IP applications and wireless channel models.
