Global Stability of Congestion Control Algorithms Without Network Delay

Overview Assuming no network delays and with appropriate queue management at the links, one develops in this paper two classes of Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) algorithms with which the network is globally asymptotically stable and one TCP algorithm with which it is globally exponentially stable. Motivated by and started from TCP Vegas, the paper introduces the first class of TCP algorithms that includes the continuous version of TCP Vegas as an example. This class of algorithms being slow in general and overly conservative, the paper suggests the fast second class of TCP algorithms. All of these algorithms are completely source-based with the measured round trip time as a feedback signal and can be implemented without any network support.
