Wireless TCP Enhancement by Proxy
Overview The TCP transport protocol has several well-known problems when used in networks with wireless links. One approach to mitigating these problems is to insert a proxy at the edge of the fixed network between the wireless and regular parts of a connection. These proxies can help by modifying the TCP communication to better utilize the wireless link. This paper gives a review of such proxy technologies. It begins by enumerating the specific problems and how proxy-based systems address each. Then the paper considers the downsides of deploying such proxies. Finally, it gives examples with performance measurements of some existing proxies.
