TCP With Link Level ARQ

Overview Wireless networks are a significant part of the Internet. Unfortunately, TCP performance degrades over wireless links where packet error rates are high due to varying wireless channel conditions. TCP interprets a packet loss as a sign of congestion and reduces transmission rate even in the presence of errors, which results in unnecessary reduction in transmission rate. Link level Automatic Repeat Request (ARQ) is one of the proposed solutions to overcome this problem. Local retransmission on a wireless link performed by a link layer ARQ protocol hide some of the packet losses from TCP. This paper introduces basic ARQ techniques and shows how ARQ improves TCP performance. Also the most important ARQ design issues that have an affect on TCP performance are described.
