A Simple Model for the Traffic Profile of TCP Streams in Heterogeneous Networks

Overview The work discussed in this paper focuses on the study of the TCP traffic generation process in heterogeneous networks employing simple on/off traffic models. The use of these models is justified out of the fact that the TCP segment generation process alternates between busy and idle periods. For a given TCP flow, the derivation of the model parameters considers the flow's mean throughput, the mean value of the Round Trip Time (RTT), as well as any bandwidth asymmetries in the forward and reverse paths (such asymmetries are common to emerging composite radio networks). Although the model, in its present form, does not incorporate dynamics corresponding to closed loop control, is suitable for traffic engineering in heavy loaded networks.
