Modelling TCP With a Discrete Time Markov Chain

Overview TCP is the most widely used transport protocol in the Internet. The end-to-end performance of most Internet applications depends largely on TCP. Researchers have devoted significant effort to model the performance of TCP as a way to understand better its operation. Modeling techniques range from the application of renewal theory, fixed-point methods and fluid models to control theoretic approaches. This paper models TCP by means of a discrete time Markov chain, which allows modeling TCP in much greater detail than the other techniques.
