Exploring the Effect of Inter-Flow Interference on TCP Performance in MANETs
Overview Research efforts in MANETs have concentrated on smoothing TCP incompatibilities with the IEEE 802.11 protocol due to the degrading effects of hidden terminals caused by transmission interference. Previous studies which have focused on solutions at the transport layer, have analysed the behaviour of single or isolated TCP flows and thus have assessed the effect of intra-flow interference only. This paper examines the effectiveness of a transport layer proposed solution called Slow Congestion Avoidance (SCA) TCP under particular conditions of inter-flow interference where multiple flows originate from the same sender. The simulation experiments indicate that by optimising the sending rate increase according to the number of simultaneous TCP connections the effects of interference are minimised and a noticeable performance gain is achieved.
