TCP - IP White Papers

A Survey on TCP Performance Evaluation and Modeling

Overview This paper is an introduction to the recent advances in performance evaluation and modeling of Internet congestion control. In particular, it focuses on the class of analytic models of TCP that explicitly consider the interaction between the transport and the network layer. Being analytic models, they can determine the impact of certain parameter settings on protocol performance, and suggest the way to modify the standard congestion control mechanism to improve the performance. The models of TCP described in this paper are essentially fluid, i.e. they ignore the discrete nature of packet transmission and describe the behaviour of TCP through compact differential equations. Fluid models can be roughly grouped into two classes.
