VoIP - IP Telephony White Papers

Protocol Alchemy: Designing a TCP-Based Approach to Support Large-Scale Deployment of VoIP on the Internet

Overview None of the standard protocols in the TCP/IP suite provides the ideal type of service to support real-time voice transport over the public Internet. Since the development of a new protocol specifically tailored for this application would be very unrealistic, the paper proposes an alternative strategy with minimal impact on the installed base. The starting point for the authors approach is TCP, the most commonly used Internet transport protocol. However, instead of changing the behavior of the protocol - in terms of when to transmit a (possibly duplicate copy of) some particular data segment - the authors change the mechanism for assigning payloads to those transmitted data segments.
