TCP - IP White Papers

Simulation of TCP for Orbiting Spacecraft Through the TDRS Satellite System

Overview NASA engineers have designed an interface system that connects the Space Shuttle and Space Station communication system to the Internet on Earth. Such a system allows for the astronauts to use services like the World Wide Web and Electronic Mail. This application provides a scenario with unique latency and throughput parameters that the standard TCP/IP protocol was not designed for. This paper discusses the changes to the TCP protocol for acceptable performance in this scenario. Simulations of the behavior of the modified TCP protocol over the Space Station or Space Shuttle links are performed using ns- 2. This paper describes the method and results of those simulations.
