Nortel Network Case Study: Southern Company

Overview With 4 million customers and nearly 39,000 Megawatts of generating capacity, Atlanta-based Southern Company (NYSE: SO) is the premier super-regional energy company in the Southeast and a leading U.S. producer of electricity. Ensuring power-grid control and customer service applications is a key requirement for the IT professionals at Southern Company. With the introduction of IP Telephony and other new applications they became increasingly concerned with bandwidth availability and latency impacts. Working closely with Nortel Networks, the team at Southern Company looked at using the Optivity Policy Services product from Nortel to manage application priority on the bandwidth that was already in place. First of all they surveyed the operating groups to determine which applications and services were most critical to the ongoing operation of the business.
