Nortel Network Case Study: PPL Telcom

Overview PPL Telcom is a wholly owned U.S. subsidiary of PPL Corporation, a Fortune 500 utility company. PPL Telcom leverages the fiber-optic capacity, utility infrastructure and rights of way of PPL Corporation, providing broadband service in 8 metro areas in eastern and central Pennsylvania. PPL wanted to differentiate itself from the local competition by building a tolerant network capable of offering differentiated services, with fiber connections as close to the customer site as possible while minimizing capital expenditures. PPL selected Nortel's Optical Ethernet solution to support the delivery of point-to-point Ethernet services for LAN extension and Internet access to customers in the area, including ISPs, financial service and healthcare institutions - customers with bandwidth demands that weren't previously met by the local service providers.
