TCP - IP White Papers

Enabling File Sharing on a Mac

Overview Older AppleTalk files servers (those not capable of AppleShare over TCP/IP) are affected by the December 31, 2002 AppleTalk phase-out. If the user accesses an AppleTalk file server located in a different zone than where the user's computer is located, he or she will not be able to access that server after December 31, 2002. In order to continue using the AppleTalk file server, the server will need to run Mac OS 9 or higher in order to allow filesharing over TCP/IP. In order to connect to this Apple TCP/IP server, the user must be running Mac OS 8 or higher on the client machine and know the IP address or the hostname of the machine they are connecting to.
