TCP - IP White Papers

TCP-Based Video Streaming Using Receiver-Driven Bandwidth Sharing

Overview This paper establishes the benefits of the proposed approach over standard TCP through Internet experiments involving a prototype for the Linux operating system. Furthermore, the paper demonstrates scenarios in which a client using the bandwidth control system may actually obtain better performance than TCP-friendly UDP streaming protocols. This causes the user's access link to act as a network bottleneck. Standard TCP shares the capacity of a bottleneck link among different flows according to their roundtrip time (RTT), and therefore may not provide streaming applications with the necessary bit-rate they need to function.
