Fluid-Flow Analysis of TCP Westwood With RED

Overview This paper concerns TCP Westwood, a recently developed modification of TCP, in combination with RED queue management. A fluid-flow model of the protocol is developed, and it is used to study both equilibrium and dynamic features. On the equilibrium side, the scaling of window with loss-probability is identified, and it is compared to TCP NewReno. The model to find the boundary of stability is also used, beyond which the authors see large oscillations; it was found that the stable region of TCP Westwood is enhanced with respect to TCP NewReno. Furthermore it shows preliminary evidence that oscillations, when they occur, have a limited impact on network throughput.
