NEC's TCP/IP Offload Engine (TOE) Powered by Ten Xtensa Cores
Overview A TCP/IP Offload Engine handles many of the basic functions required to set up, manage, and tear down TCP connections. These are not easy tasks because they include compute-intensive reconstruction of high-speed IP data streams from various independent packets. NEC wanted to design an architecture that would serve its customers for several years as the demands for network attached storage increased. Tensilica's Xtensa core offered a superior design alternative the benefits of a programmable, processor-based solution with the performance of a dedicated, rigid logic solution. By designing the TOE processor around 10 Xtensa processors optimized with storage-networking-specific instructions of their own design, the device is both highly optimized and programmable.
