Shipping Company Abandons Open Source Software for Integrated E-Mail and Operating System

Overview Leading Baltic shipping company Lisco Baltic Service, which has cargo and passengers ferry lines from Lithuania to Germany, Sweden and Russia, decided to update its ageing Open Source IT infrastructure. This was becoming increasingly difficult and expensive to manage and was no longer compatible with systems at parent company DFDS Group. To address these issues, after consulting with Microsoft Partner Baltic Amadeus, the company chose to deploy Microsoft Windows Server 2003, part of Microsoft Windows Server System integrated server software and Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 collaboration and messaging server. The new technology is reducing the administrative burden for IT staff. In addition, it offers enhanced availability of critical IT applications, such as e-mail and Internet access.
