Romanian Penitentiary Agency Implements New Prisoner-Records Management System
Overview The National Administration of Penitentiaries in Romania decided it needed to modernise its prisoner-records management system to streamline administration and help prevent overcrowding. The decision was part of the government's drive to improve its human rights record ahead of accession to the European Union in 2007. Working with local Microsoft partner Softwin, the agency commissioned an application based on Microsoft SQL Server 2000 database and replication engine. The new solution has improved communications and reporting among the 45 penal institutions and is scalable for an almost unlimited number of users. Using an alert module, the application has also reduced the risk of prison administrators overlooking key events, such as upcoming parole hearings or release dates for particular inmates.
