Overview Optical Ethernet does offer a lot of advantages over traditional data services, especially for city and metro carriers. These advantages are based around the ease of technology, the simplicity of the devices and the comparably low cost of the products. All this will result in much lower CAPEX and OPEX cost for the carrier and therefore higher margins for him. Multiple vendors offer different solutions, however important items like scalability, security, ease of configuration and maintenance must be considered carefully to achieve the full OPEX savings. So the carrier should compare the solutions from different vendors in detail as the marketing facts may all sound the same.
