Other Homes: Alternate Visions of Culturally Situated Technologies for the Home

Overview The American vision of the digital, or smart, home as a place where all manner of technology is seamlessly connected to deliver an immersive experience is one that might not necessarily be appropriate in other parts of the world. Not only is there less technology in most non-American homes, but there is arguably less of a desire for the kind of self-containment and isolation that the digital home presupposes. To design domestic technologies by incorporating an awareness of cultural context, accrued social meanings and user experiences requires a willingness to imagine a range of very different kinds of cultures, meanings and experiences.
