Microsoft Windows XP Professional Enables Unattended Installation of Operating System and Applications in Less Than an Hour

Overview Taking advantage of Remote Installation Services (RIS) and Group Policy features in the Microsoft Windows XP Professional operating system, the Corporate Services Division Information Technology Management Branch (ITMB), serving two British Columbia environmental ministries, was able to perform a completely unattended installation of both the operating system and applications in an average of 40 minutes per desktop. These capabilities will help reduce deployment costs, automate future software upgrades, and simplify hardware additions and changes. The expected result is a more consistent environment and the ability for the ministries to more efficiently administer and support their 3,500 desktops.
