Healthcare Clinic Saves Money and Improves Quality of Care With Tablet PC Solution

Overview To improve access to patient information, Marshfield Clinic is deploying an electronic medical records solution to replace paper-based methods. A pilot group of 60 physicians is using highly mobile Tablet PCs running Microsoft Windows XP Tablet PC Edition to manage medical records; by 2006, all 2,000 practitioners and support staff will use Tablet PCs. In the pilot, some physicians are saving more than 450 hours per year as a result of improved patient documentation procedures. Following full Tablet PC deployment, the clinic's Information Systems Department estimates that it will save U.S.$1.9 million per year in support costs over a desktop solution and U.S.$9 million per year from the move to its sophisticated electronic medical records system.
