Scaling SAN Connectivity on VMware

Overview Significant growth in both physical and virtual machines needed to interface to the SAN devices has three primary challenges: First, most entry and mid-range FC RAID systems have imposed limits on the number of hosts (8-64 redundant connections) that can be supported on a single array. Second, the cost of FC SAN connectivity can be prohibitive for low-cost servers. Third, test and development instances of VMware need access to copies of production data stored on FC SANs. This paper describes how iSCSI-to-FC routers can scale the number of servers supported on individual RAID systems using QLogic virtual and proxy iSCSI-to-FC interfaces.
