IBM TotalStorage Virtual Tape Server Using 3592 in a VTS Version 5

Overview The IBM TotalStorage 3494 Virtual Tape Server (VTS) revolutionized the way zSeries customers utilize their tape resources. As the capability of the underlying tape technology progressed from 3590 Model B1A tape drives and High Performance Cartridge Tape, through the E1A and H1A model drives and Extended High Performance Cartridge Tape, the base VTS and its high availability Peer to Peer (PTP VTS) configuration have been able to transparently utilize the increased capacity. With the introduction of the new 3592 drive technology, that is no longer the case. This paper describes the additional configurations and control functions the VTS and PTP VTS solutions provide for the integration of the 3592 drive and media.
