Enabling Demand-Based Switching in Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 on Dell PowerEdge Servers

Overview As processor speed increases, so do processor power and cooling requirements. Low power and low heat have been notebook PC requirements for some time, but only recently have these considerations become important for servers as well. Intel SpeedStep technology takes advantage of a power-management technique known as Demand-Based Switching (DBS). Developed by Intel and enabled in recent Linux kernels, DBS is designed to dynamically modify the voltage of the CPU - and hence the processor clock speed-based on CPU load. This paper describes DBS features and utilities enabled by the Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 OS when running on Intel Xeon processor-based Dell PowerEdge servers.
