Dynamic Multipathing: Improving Data Availability and I/O Performance Through Intelligent Management of Storage Device Access Paths

Overview Effective use of multiple I/O paths requires both awareness of storage network topology and an ability to execute pre-defined policies automatically in response to rapidly changing conditions in the I/O subsystem. The VERITAS Storage Foundation's Dynamic MultiPathing (DMP) feature automates the management of multiple I/O paths between servers and storage devices in accordance with pre-defined administrative policies. This paper describes the Dynamic MultiPathing (DMP) feature of the VERITAS Volume Manager, a component of the VERITAS Storage Foundation.
