Faster, Safer DB2 Data Migration: Using VERITAS Portable Data Containers to Move DB2 Data Between UNIX and Linux Faster and Less Disruptively

Overview By their nature, databases are application-independent. A single database can be processed in different ways by many applications - transaction processing, data mining, and software testing to name three. Thus, both because of their prevalence in enterprises, the importance of the data in them, and their multi-application nature, databases are prime candidates for migration between unlike platforms. Data from DB2 databases can be migrated between unlike platforms by exporting it from the database into files, moving the files from source platform to the target, and importing data from the files into a receiving database on the target platform. This paper illustrates the use of Portable Data Containers (PDCs) to move DB2 database data between database instances running on any combination of heterogeneous UNIX and Linux platforms.
