SAN Fundamentals: How Fibre Channel SANs Are Built, Secured and Managed

Overview This paper discusses the core technologies that are used to build and secure Fibre Channel based Storage Area Networks. Fibre Channel is a flexible standards based networking architecture that can be used as a transport mechanism for a number of Upper Level Protocols. The most common Upper Level Protocols are SCSI and TCP/IP. In this paper, the term Storage Area Network (SAN) is used to describe a Fibre Channel network over which SCSI-FCP (SCSI over Fibre Channel) Protocols run.
