The Unified File Cache (UFC) in HP-UX 11i V3

Overview Versions of HP-UX earlier than HP-UX 11i v3 maintain two separate caches for file data. The use of these caches depends on the type of file access - the Buffer Cache is used by file system operations such as read and write, and the Page Cache is used by the virtual memory subsystem as file data is brought into memory through paging operations. If an application uses the different types of access simultaneously to access data in a file, then HP-UX does not guarantee coherence because the same data might reside in both caches. The Unified File Cache (UFC) - a new feature in HP-UX 11i v3 - integrates the Buffer Cache and the Page Cache to provide coherence for file access.
