Intel Technology Powers Cutting-Edge Research for Leading Scientists at Erlangen University
Overview Erlangen University needs a powerful HPC platform with the availability and flexibility to respond effectively to scientists' demanding priorities. The university's ten-year old legacy system was beginning to hinder the researchers, who wanted to run more sophisticated and complex experiments than before, and maintenance was becoming prohibitively costly. The university added significant computing and storage capacity to its existing HPC platform to enhance on-site research facilities, with a particular focus on life sciences and engineering applications. Local systems integrator, transtec, equipped the university with a server cluster running 300 Intel Xeon processors to support life sciences and physics research, and SGI delivered Altix 3700 and 330 servers powered by a total of 48 Intel Itanium 2 processors to run demanding fluid dynamics applications.
