Queen's University Belfast Introduces Improvements Across the Board With Intel Technology

Overview In order to improve the facilities available to students and researchers, and advance its academic reputation, Queen's University Belfast has initiated the migration of all administrative, academic and business applications to an Intel Itanium 2-based microarchitecture, running Microsoft SQL Server 2005 on Microsoft Windows 2003. After a test run by the Information Services directorate, the University invested in an Intel technology-based platform and as a result, now enjoys improved efficiency, speed and performance in areas as diverse as high performance computing (HPC) and class scheduling. The university installed six Intel Itanium 2 processor-based 64-bit HP Integrity rx2600 servers running Microsoft SQL Server 2005 on Microsoft Windows 2003, and four running Microsoft SQL Server 2005 on Linux.
