The Next Step Forward in Storage Virtualization: IBM General Parallel File System (GPFS) and IBM TotalStorage SAN File System (SFS) Come Together

Overview IBM has taken the next step in storage virtualization by merging the best in file system performance, scalability and flexibility. IBM has integrated key features of IBM TotalStorage SAN File System (SFS) into IBM General Parallel File System (GPFS). The goal of this paper is to introduce GPFS, at a high level, and to compare GPFS functionality and architecture to SFS by highlighting the similarities and differences between GPFS and SFS. This paper is intended to help those who are familiar with SFS and are looking for information on GPFS. It answers many questions including: What is GPFS? How is GPFS similar to SFS? How do they differ? This paper starts by reviewing high level architecture differences then compares some more detailed features.
