Overview This white paper compares the strengths of the extended relational approach with the more commonly used pure relational approach and highlights various ways in which the extended relational approach provides an advantage over the pure relational approach in terms of development, performance, and maintenance of the database. It also discusses two products that held early leadership positions in this area, are still widely used, and are actively developed and marketed by IBM: UniVerse and UniData. This white paper discusses their suitability for use, especially embedded in vertical applications with special data management requirements.
