Enhancing, and Implementing the Snoop Protocol in Linux
Overview With the wide acceptance of wireless networks, the Performance Enhancement Proxies (PEP) has become a subject of much research. Due to the shortcomings of TCP over wireless networks, PEPs are important in ensuring better utilization of network resources. The PEP the authors dwell on in this paper is known as Snoop, a link layer - TCP aware mechanism, which performs recovery for lost packets on the last mile wireless local loop. With the growing amount of research in networking being done on the Linux platform, Snoop implementation on Linux will serve as a reference for benchmarking and implementing new ideas in the area of PEP. Performance tests are run first to confirm the concept of snoop, and then to benchmark the snoop module for Linux.
