Phase Noise Suppression in OFDM Using a Kalman Filter

Overview The performance of an OFDM system can be strongly degraded by the presence of random phase noise especially if a system design targets high data rates at high carrier frequencies. Phase noise causes constellation rotation, the so called Common Phase Error (CPE), and InterCarrier Interference (ICI). This paper introduces an algorithm for pilot based CPE estimation using an Extended Kalman Filter (EKF). A method for calculating power of ICI needed for EKF operation but also important in general for the characterization of phase noise influence on OFDM transmission, is presented as well.
