Channel Estimation Techniques for OFDM Systems

Overview Channel estimation is an important and necessary function for modern wireless receivers. With even a limited knowledge of the wireless channel properties, a receiver can gain insight into the information that was sent by the transmitter. The goal of channel estimation is to measure the effects of the channel on known, or partially known transmissions. A channel will change with changing conditions and topology. Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing(OFDM) systems are especially suited for channel estimation. The subcarriers are closely spaced and the system is generally used in high speed applications that are capable of computing channel estimates with minimal delay. Subcarriers that are sent with a known power and make-up are called pilots and are used for synchronization and channel estimation.
