ICI Reduction Method for OFDM Systems

Overview Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) has an increased symbol duration which makes it robust against Inter-Symbol-Interference (ISI). However, the longer symbol duration increases the Inter-Carrier-Interference (ICI) caused by Doppler spread in time variant channels. One method to combat the performance degradation due to ICI is to linearly approximate the channel variation during one OFDM symbol and create a channel matrix which can be used for ICI cancellation. This paper proposes a new model which outperforms the algorithms published in earlier papers. The paper also investigates the effects of ICI on the new OFDM-based digital radio standard DRM and show that the proposed algorithm can significantly reduce the performance degradation caused by ICI.
