Userland File Systems in Linux

Overview Files and file systems comprise the most important and flexible interfaces available to a program in nearly all operating systems. The mechanism for exporting a new file system in Unix, however, has traditionally required adding functionality to the kernel, which can be time-consuming and cumbersome. While certain variants of Unix exist that allow non-privileged processes to export their own file systems, good facilities for developing such "Userland file systems" in GNU/Linux and other Unix systems have been lacking. This paper reviews the shortcomings of existing packages and tries to improve the efficiency and generality of the most promising one, "Avfs", by repairing and extending Avfs' shared library interface.
