Using the Linux Operating System to Illustrate Message Digest Concepts and Vulnerabilities
Overview There are many ways to help insure file integrity, but one of the most common is the application of a message digest algorithm. A message digest is a fixed string number which represents that file uniquely. It is widely believed that Information Technology students typically learn most effectively when given meaningful hands on exercises. Therefore, examples using the Linux operating system were devised. Hence, the purpose of this paper was to use the commands with in the Linux operating system to illustrate message digest concepts and vulnerabilities. Specifically, the paper addressed using date, time and file size as integrity checks and discussed their limitation in light of the capabilities of the touch command.
