To V or Not to V: A Practical Guide to Virtualization

Overview Virtualization has become so widespread that industry pundits have called it a megatrend. Many forms of Virtualization are available nowadays, each with its own set of potential gains. Of course, with every new technology comes a new set of challenges. This paper explores the benefits of Virtualization and discusses the difficulties in measuring the results in the real world. The inter-play between hardware and software is examined by covering two popular implementations of Virtualization: Intel's Hyper-threading technology and VMWare's ESX server software.
