Virtual I/O Enabling the Utility Data Center

Overview This paper explains how Topspin delivers scalable and seamless virtual I/O for InfiniBand clusters. I/O resources are separated from the server chassis and aggregated to form shared pools that are managed with industry standard protocols. Each server has access to I/O resources in the Server Switch fabric. Port assignments are dynamic and transparent to the applications. Topspin virtualizes I/O by directly providing the services that applications use. The services concept is more powerful than remote port access schemes where servers function essentially as before, with ports located remotely.
