Running Quake II on a grid

Overview This white paper explains how IBM transformed a single-server online game engine into a multiserver MMOG (massively multiplayer online game) engine running on a grid.

Using IBM OptimalGrid middleware, the authors were able to reuse the existing game engine without making any significant changes to it. This paper:

  • Examines the design elements needed by an MMOG
  • Provides a practical implementation example—the extension of the id Software Quake II game engine
  • Explores novel features developed in this work
  • Presents the results of the initial performance validation experiments that were conducted on the modified system
