WiMAX or WiBRO: Similar Names, Yet Dissimilar Technologies

Overview By all accounts, a successful launch and widespread adoption by the South Korean consumers bodes well for next-generation mobile broadband wireless services in general, and WiBro in particular. However, due to meaningful differences between the two technologies, WiBro and Mobile WiMAX are not compatible with each other. For the near-term, this lack of compatibility will limit the WiBro market opportunity primarily to South Korea, and possibly a small number of additional markets in Asia, while the more universally accepted Mobile WiMAX will be deployed in other parts of the world. As discussed in this white paper, the non-compatibility between the two standards can best be explained by looking at the relationship between the WiMAX Forum, WiBro and the IEEE 802.16-2005 standard.
