A Business Model for Napster-Like File Sharing and File Backup

Overview P2P networks, first introduced in May 1999, have experienced rapid growth and are now one of the most common Internet applications. However, no network currently exists that takes advantage of the strong demand for such file-sharing networks to create a profitable business. This paper draws upon recent work on digital auctions, specifically the development of the Sample Cost Sharing auction (SCS), to suggest a potentially profitable business model for a Napster-like system without significantly changing its underlying architecture. This paper further shows how this network can function simultaneously as a file-sharing and file-backup utility.
