European Retail Chain Replaces Linux Operating System With Microsoft Solution
Overview Ahold Central Europe (ACE), the Prague-based retailing group owning convenience and department stores, wanted a new IT infrastructure after merging its Czech, Polish, and Slovak operations. ACE's legacy systems were based on disparate technology including Microsoft Windows NT version 4.0, Linux, and Novell NetWare. A benchmarking exercise resulted in ACE choosing Microsoft Windows Server 2003, part of Microsoft Windows Server System integrated server software, and Microsoft Windows XP Professional. By using Windows Server 2003 with Active Directory, ACE reduced its IT management costs by centralising configuration and securing lock down of the clients based on Group Policy technology. ACE is retaining 90 per cent of its existing workstations while upgrading them to Windows XP Professional without losing any of its legacy business-critical applications.
