Displaying the Similarity of a Case and Matched Controls

Overview This paper presents a method to discover observations similar to a specified observation, and a graphic display to assess the suitability of the selected observations based upon the homogeneity of each selection variable. The case-control study design selects one observation or experimental unit as the "Case" variable and obtains as "Matched controls" one or more additional observations or experimental units which are similar to the case, except for the variable(s) under study. A standard clustering technique uses supplied selection variables to extract a subset of observations similar to each other and to the control observation. A graph displays the standardized value of each selection variable for the case (target) observation.
