Windows 2000 Platform Scalability Review

Overview With the introduction of Microsoft's Windows 2000 Datacenter Server and Intel-based hardware systems from vendors that are established in enterprise environments, the Windows platform has become a viable player in the datacenter world. Microsoft's technology now allows users to deploy scalable systems that employ both horizontal (i.e., "Scale-out") and vertical (i.e., "Scale-up") approaches. The vertical scalability gains enabled by the Windows 2000 Server family complement the horizontal scalability approaches for which Microsoft has long optimized in an effort to enable efficient three-tier infrastructures. Given the freedom to use Windows 2000 for both scaling up and scaling out, users must consider a variety of factors when making a choice between scalability approaches.
