Virtualisation Gets Top Honours From New South African University

Overview North-West University is one of the larger universities in South Africa with approximately 43,000 students. The new educational establishment is the result of the merger of three former institutions, and this has created a complex organisational structure spread across four rural campuses up to 300km apart. Creating an IT infrastructure to support this large organisation was a difficult challenge and it made sense to run the widely distributed architecture centrally from the main site at Potchefstroom. The three main campuses are connected by 2Mbit Telkom WAN links and each site has a number of HP ProLiant BL20p blade servers connected to at least one HP StorageWorks EVA SAN (Enterprise Virtual Array Storage Area Network).
