Understanding VPN Technology Choices: Comparing MPLS, IPSec, and SSL

Overview There are three basic IP VPN technologies in use today: Multi Protocol Label Switching (MPLS), IP Security (IPSec), and Secure Sockets Layer (SSL). While MPLS is the primary technology used for a foundation infrastructure, there are some key advantages you can gain by adding the IPSec and SSL protocols, including the ability to:

  • Establish a VPN connection through the Internet (IPSec)
  • Establish security in a clientless environment (SSL)
This AT&T white paper explains how these VPN technologies complement each other and explains why their "intelligent combination" can cover most remote access situations a company is likely to face.
