Software Architectures for High-Availability Ethernet Services
Overview Services based on Ethernet have moved from the planning stage to reality over the last few years. The first wave of service providers that built a portfolio of these services did so solely on the basis of offering higher bandwidth at lower cost. However, while this type of service may attract a certain segment of enterprise customers, the overwhelming majority make their buying decisions not just on the price of bandwidth. They base it on other factors like reliability, performance, flexibility and simplicity. The attributes are found only in equipment that is built with these goals in mind; attributes that cannot be achieved by a retrofit. This paper focuses on why software reliability in routers is a critical attribute for providing carrier-grade Ethernet services.
